Further to the issue of electrical safety and non-compliant goods, - TopicsExpress

Further to the issue of electrical safety and non-compliant goods, many of you wanted to know what we are doing to rid the marketplace of these unsafe products. In recent days, we have visited shops and markets in a range of locations including Haymarket, Chinatown, Darling Harbour, Ashfield, Marrickville and Eastwood. This follows inspections in Dapto, Wollongong, Auburn, Silverwater, Parramatta, Hurstville and Campsie. Non-compliant electrical items were seized from several locations, others were taken for examination and testing, while traders and importers were instructed to remove all unapproved products from sale. We have an ongoing compliance and enforcement program in relation to electrical product safety laws and conduct covert inspections anywhere, anytime in response to consumer complaints as well as marketplace intelligence. Penalties for selling these items are extensive and range from on-the-spot fines of $500 to prosecutions carrying maximum penalties of $87,500 and/or two years imprisonment for an individual and $875,000 for a corporation. For more information on the inspections we’ve been conducting, read our Minister’s media releases by following the links in the comment below. If you or anyone you know has any electrical products that are unmarked or appear to be unapproved or counterfeit, the goods should not be used. Please help us to protect you by notifying us as soon as possible if you see any unapproved or counterfeit goods for sale in NSW. Please let us know by lodging a complaint via our website or calling 13 32 20.
