Fvck your ageism. I got love for all the grandmas :)) Meet Sybil, my mischievous 90-years-young partner in crime. As a San Jose native, she and her family were rounded up in the 40s and sent to internment camp. They were given 24hours to pack up one suitcase each. They were herded via train to the Salinas Assembly Center where they were imprisoned for 8months until they were later corralled to the Poston Internment Camp in Arizona. Each barrack contained four families, regardless if you had one child, or ten. She graduated high school in the Poston Barracks and lived there for more than 2 years. During that time, her brother (imprisoned as an enemy in this camp) was still drafted into the U.S. Army and lost his life in Germany. Each family was promised a trunk of household treasures would arrive at the end of their imprisonment, of sacred household items. Her mother had packed away dishes, photos, family heirlooms and linens. When the trunk arrived, it had nothing but wool blankets covered in pigeon shit. They were not returned their home in San Jose. During this time her mother lost her sanity and never fully recovered. Even after the internment camps officially ended, each Japanese person had to be sponsored by an outside individual in order to have permission to leave. She was adopted into a family and became a field worker. Farm jobs were the only jobs available for Japanese enemies at this time. Sybil was born in the United States of America. These atrocities happened on our soil, on the liberal west coast hardly 70 years ago. These people are still alive, and they remember. Please consider these stories when you talk about a post-racial society in America. We are barely a generation removed from these blatant and disgusting violations of civil liberties. Btw, Sybil is a sassy spitfire and I will gladly hang out with her again soon. She has a date tonight with a younger man, so Im returning to Kaiser to visit with my other grandma friend
