Dragica Stojković, Zürich Polyphonic listening is a necessity when dealing with multilingualism, but also a chance: It draws attention to the complexity of language, sheds light on the fact that there is no such thing as speaking exactly the same language, even if therapist and patient share their mother tongue. On the basis of two case reports, I’d like to explore the following hypotheses: (1) Polyphonic listening is a basic psychoanalytic tool not only in therapies with polyglot patients, but also in the analysis of dreams and the capacity to hear and interpret ‚prosodic slips of the tongue’ and other ambiguities of language. (2)The choice and/or shifts of language in therapies with polyglot patients are surrounded by many fantasies dealing with sameness-otherness, the feeling of being (miss-)understood, and the struggles of finding one’s own voice.
