G-STRING (Baguio Midland Courier 11/09/2014) GABY B. KEITH Keeping it simple If this near-sighted Ibaloy writer is not mistaken, it was Dr. Albert Einstein, the theory of relativity formulator and apostle of simplicity, who believed that the simplest solutions are often the answers to life’s and the universe’s profoundest problems and questions. Come to think of it, most conflicts, whether among nations, families, friends or spouses, could possibly be avoided or even solved peacefully through simple dialogue or open and honest communication between the parties. Even friendly competitions can engender understanding and camaraderie among people of different races, nationalities or beliefs. Recent examples held here are the Korean Day speech contest between Korean and Filipino students and the Muay Thai bout between German and Filipino kickboxers both conducted in cooperation with the city government. In ways both simple and profound, contestants or competitors get to know and understand each other a little better. During these friendly competitions, friendships may blossom and respect for each other’s culture and traditions are at times, achieved. In this modern age of great complexity, keeping it simple may just do the trick. Fyi: The Philippine Mine Safety and Environment Association will conduct its 61st Mine Safety and Environment Conference here from November 10 to 14. The city government is suspending the number coding scheme for the same period to accommodate the hundreds of delegates expected to join the week-long event. The organization advocates a national campaign on occupational safety, health and environmental issues affecting the mining industry and its related operations. It is composed of mining companies, cement plants, quarries, suppliers, service contractors, professional groups and government agencies. As a venue for national conferences, it’s more fun and cooler in Baguio! Good News: A recent report published by the Geneva-based World Economic Forum (WEF) revealed that our beautiful archipelago of delicious coconuts, smiling carabaos and blushing strawberries is ranked ninth among 142 countries when it comes to gender equality in the workplace. The five Nordic countries led by Iceland, remained the most gender-equal. Also in the top ten are Nicaragua, Rwanda, Ireland and Belgium. It’s more fun in the Philippines! Congratulations to Leo Marcelino and Gwen Aqui who exchanged “I Do’s” yesterday in La Trinidad, Benguet with Pastor Rameses Gamboa as officiating minister. Parents of the bride and groom are Lorenzo, Jr and Marilyn Aqui and Ricardo and Lydia Marcelino, respectively. Mabuhay ang bagong kasal! Birthday greetings to three lovely ladys: My Canada-based sister Dr. Ianna Keith-Regalado last Monday, my niece Patricia Moises who had her debut Wednesday and my lovely daughter Samantha who turns 14 tomorrow. Also to Baguio City Police Office officer in charge Rolando Miranda who blew an extra candle recently. Cheers! A Magandang Baguio! welcome to visitors of this former Ibaloy pastureland. Let us continue to keep Bag-iw clean and green, strictly observe its anti-littering, smoking, smoke belching and anti-graffiti campaigns and other rules and regulations. Baguio is our home. Baguio is in the heart. We’re on TV, Fridays, 10 a.m., over Skycable Channel 12 for Usapang turismo and give reports on local radio stations when needed. Visit the tourism and special events division, Baguio Convention Center or call 442-1007 for assistance or information. Here’s “Anecdote of the Jar” by Wallace Stevens: “I placed a jar in Tennessee,/ And round it was, upon a hill./ It made the slovenly wilderness/ Surround the hill./ The wilderness rose up to it,/ And sprawled around, no longer wild./ The jar was round upon the ground/ And tall and of a port in air./ It took dominion everywhere./ The jar was gray and bare./ It did not give of bird or bush,/ Like nothing else in Tennessee.” Until next week and may our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ continue to bless and keep us all safe.
