G+ vs. FB for photographers Recently, my pal Robert Scoble was chatting with me about photos on FB vs. G+. Although G+ seems quieter these days (no G+ mention at I/O), I think its still a very active place for photography. I worry about G+ since Vic Gundotra left Google. Im sure its still in capable hands, but when Vic was there it really was his baby and he lived and breathed G+ and really was a tremendous cheerleader for it to the outside world -- and I assume also a huge advocate for it inside of Google. When I was talking with Robert the other day he said that he thought I posted higher quality photos to G+ than FB -- actually I post the exact same photos to both networks though, just in different order. Robert also mentioned that some of my photos that might get thousands of likes on G+ also are probably helped along by being included ini Whats Hot which is probably true. He also told me the other night that he thinks people might be less reluctant to like something on Facebook because it amplifies and reflects as your taste to your friends more -- so maybe Facebook likers are more picky with photos. Anyways, today I figured Id post the exact same photo at the exact same time to both networks to compare the reaction to my photograph. I took it with my iPhone. I obviously have a lot more followers on G+, but since many of those are not active accounts, I wanted to see what sort of active engagement I would get from each network. The photo is in the screenshot above. Im pretty sure it didnt make Whats Hot because those photos usually get at least 1,000 +1s. G+ (as of this post) Total +1s = 444 comments = 16 reshares = 14 FB (as of this post) Total likes = 72 comments = 3 reshares = 1 In general Id say Ive been much more social here at FB over the past few months than G+. Im not sure why -- maybe because more of my closer friends are more active over here than G+ right now, but I do think the numbers show that G+ still is a formidable place for photographers to promote their work. My other thoughts? At big screen, the photo looks much better on G+ than FB and on smaller dedicated page view, the FB screen looks much more cluttered with more ads.
