GAMBIAN BOXER’S RING OPPONENT CONFIRMED Published on Thursday, 19 September 2013 17:20 | Written by Sulayman Bah By Sulayman Bah Prizefighter Gambia’s Patrick Mendy will get an engaged schedule with English fighter Callum Smith confirmed as his next ring adversary. Doubts were initially raised over the possibility of the contest being staged, but it has now been confirmed that 23-year-old Callu Smith will square with the Gambian. The bout comes in the wake of Patrick’s recent slumping show in the ring, but the 22-year-old Gambian is hoping to spring back to his winning spree form with his fight with Smith which presents the chance to achieve that. His English opponent, who recently turned professional with amateur seven victories under his belt, believes knocking the Reading-based Gambian off his perch will be catalyst to catapult him to the summit of things. “Patrick has been around for a long time even though he’s younger than me, so he’ill fancy his chances of beating me, but I’m flying at the moment and I’m ready for the longer fights ,”a buoyant Smith is quoted as saying. However, with a statistic of fifteen victories in a total of twenty-two bouts just six defeats, a single stalemate and a knock out win, appears an impressive feat in a one of four title contests in what promises a scintillating nights of duels at the Olympia. The bout is slated for September 21st. Mendy, Gambia’s sole boxer in England became the youngest prizefighter winner sending finalists Paul David sprawling to pocket £32,000 for his win.
