GAME SPOTLIGHT: Warmachine Warmachine is a popular 30mm tabletop minatures game and hobby made by US company Privateer Press. Set in a fantasy world of conflict known as the Iron Kingdoms, Warmachine is an exciting mix of steampunk and magical workings. A player takes control of a Warcaster who in turn commands armies and the power of magically-driven steam-powered constructs known as Warjacks. The Warjacks themselves are walking robot-like hulks of metal that are designed to rip armies to shreds. This is a typcial miniatures game so assembly and painting of models is required but most communities do not require you to paint in order to play. Needless to say, the hobby is in the collecting, assembling and painting of gorgeous models with an impressive selection of both themematic factions and models found within them. A small run down of some of the factions: Cygnar - Crazy knights. Like electricity. Hate winter Khador - Crazy soviets. Like the cold. Hate the gulag. Protectorate of Menoth - Crazy religious fanatics. Like fire. Hate unbelievers Cryx - Crazy evil undead. Like corruption. Hate everyone Retribution of Scyrah - Crazy elves. Like skipping through the forest. Hate round ears Mercenaries - Crazy everyone else. Like dwarves/pirates/freedom fighters. Hate cohesive army collections Check out the gallery for examples of these factions. All of the available models can be viewed here, some in 3D: privateerpress/warmachine/gallery A typical game lasts 1-2 hours depending on size of armies which is usually played at 50 points at tournaments but also supports smaller armies such as 25 or 35 points for newer players. Most factions have over a dozen warcasters to choose from, each with their own playstyles and special rules. This alone gives players amazing amounts of variety in both playstyle and army selection. The rules themselves are easy to pick up but contain a good level complexity for the more competitive player and much effort has been taken to ensure that any ambiguity is avoided in wording of rules so you can be sure what a rule means simply by the way it is read. Warmachine can also be ran with its sister game Hordes where most of the rules are identical. Fans of Warmachine & Hordes boast that the game itself is very well balanced with most factions, if not all, being highly competitve. There are good and not so good models but the game does not present the usual sort of new release, power creep that can be commonly associated with an ongoing collectible miniature game. If you have any questions, jot them down here and one of our lovely Pressgangers (thats Privateer Press word for volunteered to slave away for you) will be more than happy to assist. They can even arrange demonstrations at your local club or meet you at your local store to chat more about Warmachine.
