Although it is December and winter comes this month, there are certain garden chores and tips for t Both live and cut Christmas trees need water while they are inside. Keep live trees that have roots indoors for a minimum of time in order to keep them healthy. I recommend no more than 7 to 10 days. This is a good time to give your evergreens a deep soaking, especially this year, when we are below average in rainfall. As the temperatures cool down, remember our feathered friends by keeping your bird feeders filled. Mulch azaleas, rhododendrons, camellias, and laurels after the ground freezes. Spring-flowering bulbs, such as tulips, may be planted up until the ground becomes frozen. In our area this may not occur until sometime in January. So, giving fellow gardeners bulbs this time of year makes a perfect gift. If we should get snow, coat your snow shovel with a “no-stick” cooking spray; the snow slides right off. If we do get ice or snow, be aware of the damage that traditional salt melt can do to concrete sidewalks as well as contaminating the soil with salt buildup.
