GAWLER UNIVERSITY Imagine Greater Gawler in 10 years time without a University. Now imagine the difference that a University will bring. Roseworthy Campus deals solely with animal and veterinary science. Barossa currently has no Uni. The closest is Mawson Lakes. I say let’s compete. With Holden, Holden’s suppliers and other manufacturers seeming to wane we are all being told that we need to create something new. Gawler University has a great ring to it. In ten years time we will be pumping out year 12 students from Xavier, Trinity, and Gawler Colleges as well as Faith and the other Barossa and nearby schools to our north and immediate south. Trinity already taps in to overseas and country students and has community boarders. The need is there and can be grown. University student’s, specially international students want to be in a City Centre. But although we all complain and want electrification our current rail service is still only 42 minutes by express to the City. A hop and a skip in international terms. Besides which an influx of Uni-students will create a critical mass here in Gawler for a regional centre of education, tertiary and university pursuits, and associated, arts, entertainment and night life. I predict that if we don’t do this first Light or Barossa will beat us to it. Imagine our main street revitalised with University facilities – do you remember what eastern Hindley Street was like before Uni SA took roots and changed its face. Of course we need to preserve the important aspects of our heritage. We can do both. The de-regulation of Universities by the Federal Government gives the opportunity for international universities to develop campuses in Australia. The new international privately funded Torrens University in the historic Torrens House in Adelaide’s Victoria Square is already planning to expand. Gawler University is a “can do”. It is a 5 to 8 year plan and will set us up for the future. It will give a real reason for us to be a regional community hub. It will bring in academics, staff, students, and all the supporting business opportunities. At the same time it is the type of business that we can embrace. A University Town is traditionally on the banks of a River, Oxford on the River Oxe. And Cambridge on the River Cam. Gawler has three, the North Para, the South Para and the Gawler Rivers so we are already two rivers ahead. Where will it be located? We can work that out. Who will fund it? Private or Public? We can work that out? Who will drive it? We can get the expertise on board. The first thing is to embrace the idea and get it going before one of our neighbours does. We can do this.
