GCC meeting to resume Mayor’s future uncertain Proceedings at the Gaborone city council are due to resume this morning following an attempt by ruling party councillors to topple Mayor Haskins Nkaigwa yesterday. BDP councillors walked out of the full council meeting yesterday, forcing Nkaigwa to adjourn the proceedings. BDP councilor, Rupert Hambira had tabled an urgent motion requesting the current leadership to resign. He said Nkaigwa’s leadership should quit, to allow the council to vote new leadership the opposition has lost the majority status. BDP has 18 councillors, one more than the combined opposition. This after Village Ward’s councillor, Seabelo Thekiso, defected to BDP from the BCP. But Mayor Nkaigwa said the council is governed by the Local Government Act, and the law does not state that leadership will resign on the basis of their majority status.
