GCDC believes that school choice is about education, not education - TopicsExpress

GCDC believes that school choice is about education, not education delivery systems, and about children, not schools. School choice has been opposed for a variety of reasons; the most prevalent being claims it will drain funds from public schools and alleged constitutional violations concerning public monies going to religious schools. The latest opposition claim is that school choice is an attempt to “privatize” our public schools, and “profit” off of public education. It is a mystery how legislators or, in DCSD’s case, school board members, would profit from providing education options. School choice in the form of scholarships or vouchers allows parents to use some portion of taxpayer monies allotted to the education of their child at a private school of their choice. By this action, public schools are by no means made any less public—they are still a government entity “owned” by the public. No amount of profit made by private schools, even with taxpayer monies included, can make our public schools “private”—that would require, as they say, “an act of congress!” School choice is just a method to provide education options for children. That’s all. That’s it. The only agenda behind it is more access to a good education for more children. And that is quite enough. For the majority of children, our public schools ARE the best option! The Choice Scholarship Program completes the menu of choice in our district, and that’s why we say Douglas County is a Great Choice!
