GENDER SPECIALIST- SIERRA LEONE Description Gender Specialist- Sierra Leone Location: Sierra Leone, Freetown Division: Program Management Status: Consultant Position Number: 13:206 Project Description: IFES is seeking a Gender Specialist for a future program in Sierra Leone that will focus on increasing women’s participation in local governance and building the capacity of local governance institutions. The Gender Specialist should have experience building the capacity of local civil society organizations and institutions, an understanding of the common obstacles to women’s participation in West Africa and familiarity with managing USAID-funded programs. The position will be an advisory role, involving several TDY trips to Sierra Leone over the period of three years. Job Responsibilities: • Conduct an assessment of the status of gender sensitive programs and policies in use by local government institutions throughout the country. • Design customized interventions to increase local government institutions’ awareness of and sensitivity to the obstacles to women’s economic and political participation. • Design customized interventions to build the capacity of women’s advocates and civil society organizations. • Support program team in implementation of program activities designed to increase the capacity of women leaders and civil society organizations. • Advise program team on possible strategies to encourage local politicians to support and adopt gender sensitive programs and policies. • Mentor and advise program team on gender mainstreaming. Qualifications: • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in political science, law, international relations political science, public policy or gender studies. • Demonstrated knowledge of women’s rights issues and election processes. • At least 5 years of progressive professional experience in gender analysis and programming. • Demostrated experience working on projects promoting women’s participation. • Demonstrated training experience. • Extensive field-based experience, preferably in West Africa • Demonstrated work experience in program design and strategy to promote gender equity, especially in complex/high-risk environments • Expert analytical, communications, and writing skills. • Strong skills in written and oral communications in English.
