GENESEO: Sheriff Thomas J. Dougherty announces the official implementation of a new vehicle and design to the Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicles. The fleet is transitioning away from the larger Chevy Tahoe special service vehicle with a V8 to a Ford Interceptor SUV package with a V6. The Ford is built for police use and is police pursuit rated where the former was not. The new vehicle is all wheel drive and will continue to allow Deputies to respond to emergencies in any type of weather conditions. The purchase price of the Interceptor SUV compared to the Tahoe was about $3,500 cheaper. “We are really excited about these new vehicles for many different reasons,” said Sheriff Dougherty. “We saved the taxpayers approximately $17,500 in the 2014 budget by replacing aged out Tahoes with the Interceptor SUV’s instead of continuing to purchase new Tahoes. The Deputies are raving about the performance, the spaciousness of the driver area and the fuel efficiency. We also put Bluetooth in the vehicles so we can set the example of hands-free phone operation which in the past has been a constant struggle. This is due to the all the phone communications a Deputy has with our 911 Center and complainants over a typical shift. We believe with the added Bluetooth option, this will no longer be an issue resulting in improved officer safety and improved public perception.” “The new design and decals are also built with public safety and officer safety in mind,” said Polices Services Chief Deputy Matthew Burgess, who oversees the fleet. “You will notice high reflective chevrons on the rear of the vehicle and a high reflective vinyl material on the sides of the vehicles which illuminate at night. These improvements were made to increase the visibility of patrols both for safety and as a crime deterrent.”
