GEO-5 Travel Award for Journalists and Bloggers Deadline: 15 October 2013 Open to: journalists and bloggers writing about GEO-5 in Latin American and the Caribbean Prize: US $1,500 in travel funding Description The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is pleased to announce a competition, in two categories, for the best published (1) newspaper or magazine article, and (2) blog post, on a theme linked with GEO-5 (Global Environmental Outlook) somewhere in the Latin America and Caribbean region. Entries can be in Spanish or English (regional languages in which GEO-5 is currently available). Global Environment Outlook (GEO) is a consultative, participatory process that builds capacity for conducting integrated environmental assessments for reporting on the state, trends and outlooks of the environment. GEO is also a series of products that informs environmental decision-making and aims to facilitate the interaction between science and policy. Prize In addition to the glory of success, the prize in each category would be up to US$ 1,500 in travel funding, to cover environmental issues in an area of the region the winner otherwise wouldn’t have the chance to visit. Eligibility The competition would cover articles or blogs published between 1 June and 30 September 2013. They could focus exclusively on issues relating to GEO-5, or could relate issues in the report to important environmental challenges at the regional, national or local level. Application If you’d like to take part, please send the following to [email protected] by 15 October 2013: a link to the published blog or article (or for newspaper and magazine articles not published on-line, a PDF copy with information on the when and where of publication), and a paragraph of not more than 150 words describing how you plan to use the travel funding. Winners will be selected by a jury organized by UNEP (whose staff and consultants cannot participate in the competition). The main criteria for selection will include novelty of content, quality of writing, context from GEO-5, and scientific accuracy of the published article, as well as the quality of the proposal to use the award. For blogs, the readership response would also be taken into account. The award would need to be used, and the resulting article or blog post published, by 30 June 2014. In addition, the link HERE contains some short policy briefs covering the following areas (1) agriculture, (2) biodiversity, (3) governance, (4) water and (5) climate change vulnerability.
