GEORGE TOWN: Three hand-grenades, 76 bullets and four M16 magazines were found in an empty premises at Jalan Tun Dr Awang, Bukit Jambul, here Monday night. Northeast District Police chief ACP Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said the explosives and ammunition were found in a multipurpose bag behind an air conditioning unit in the balcony of the premises. Three workers who were trying to fix the air conditioner at the premises found the items when they were checking its compressor at 9pm, he said in a press conference Tuesday. He said all the items were still functional and the police would run a ballistics test on the ammunition for further investigation. The premise, which was located on the first floor of a three-storey shophouse had previously been raided by police on Jan 6 and the police were currently investigating the possibility of a connection between the two cases, he said. Mior Faridalathrash said the premises had been used as a beauty parlour before, but it was evacuated by the previous tenant after the drug raid. The police are currently investigating the reason why the grenades and ammunition were hidden there, he said. He said an inspection done by the Bomb Disposal Unit found that the explosives and 5.56mm calibre ammunition did not belong to the Malaysian government. We believe that they were smuggled in from a neighbouring country, he said. He urged those with any information regarding incident to contact the nearest police station to help investigations.
