GERRY AND THE PACEMAKERS: This is such a fun group. They, too, were part of the 1964 British Invasion, a Mersey beat group like the Beatles, and also got their start at the Cavern Club, although with not as much impact as the big three. Their first three singles hit the top of the charts in a row, a record that stood until the mid-1980s. They had many hits in 1964 and 1965, at which point their popularity began to decline. The group disbanded in 1966, but Gerry put them back together in 1974. His brother, Freddie, was their drummer, but he sadly passed on in 2006. Gerry and the band continue to tour, mostly throughout the UK, but this year is on a min-British Invasion anniversary tour. Just this week they passed through the greater Philadelphia region at two venues. I would have loved to have seen this, since I was too young the first time, but personal commitments prevented that. I enjoy this group so much. Their tunes are written mostly by Gerry, and are simple and catchy and while their musical stylings and appearances are not the DC5, they do remind me of our boys in their simplicity of sentiment and their bright enthusiasm and energy while performing. You will certainly recognize Dont Let The Sun Catch You Crying, and Ferry Cross The Mersey.
