GERTRUDE STEIN - (American, 1874 - 1946) I write for myself and strangers, wrote Stein The strangers, dear Readers, are an afterthought. Noted for being the author of rather obscure prose, she was a noted intellect with firm opinions. Stein lived on the East Bank of Paris, France after 1903 where she extended great influence upon others of artistic and literate genius, like Hemmingway and Picasso. Her most famous quotable written work is Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose. She also lived openly with her female lover/companion. Who knows how this atypical revolutionary-thinking femme intellect would have faired in America during her own era....?
