GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER, Hon Radrodro says to FIJI GOVERNMENT --------- Office of the Opposition Chambers Parliament House Suva MEDIA STATEMENT Honorable Aseri Radrodro, Shadow Minister for Infrastructure and Transport calls on Government to get their act together and solve the impasse caused by damaged water pipes and the leakage of waste-water into the Cunningham creek. DAMAGED WATER PIPES Water Authority of Fiji, CEO, Opetaia Ravai said through various media agencies that the bad weather conditions have disrupted the Tamavua Water Treatment Plant decreasing water intake by 40% that is affecting nearly 67,000 customers primarily in Tamavua-i-wai, Tacirua, Cunningham, Delainavesi, Lami and Veisari to Togalevu. Honorable Radrodro has also asked the Government and Water Authority of Fiji to be more responsible and publish the times of water disruptions and the routes of water distribution trucks. It is also time the public is made aware of all disaster strategies and that more capital and energy is placed directly into infrastructure strengthening and not heavy on administration and unnecessary activities. Honorable Radrodro has also given his support to the many men and women who are working around the clock to ensure damaged pipes are fixed and water supply restored. LEAKAGE OF WASTE-WATER INTO THE CUNNINGHAM CREEK Honorable Radrodro is concerned that a wastewater trunk line that carries untreated waste from the greater Suva area to the Kinoya Waste Treatment Plant has collapsed and that wastewater is now being discharged directly into Cunningham Creek flowing into the Laucala Bay area. The 2013 Constitution of Fiji, guarantee’s every Fiji Citizen the Right to proper Housing and Sanitation, and the Right to Safe Drinking Water. Honorable Radrodro has also reminded the Government of their commitment to Equal Citizenry, and that all citizens of Fiji need to be given proper sanitation, water and infrastructural services and not disadvantaged or treated with less urgency because of economic backgrounds. The longer we allow the people of affected area’s to endure the water disruptions and subject the residents along the Cunningham Creek and Laucala Bay to the injurious leakage of waste-water, the Water Authority of Fiji and Government will need to prepare for an outbreak of a pandemic. Honorable Radrodro is calling on Government to assure the people of Fiji, that they have implemented a plan to strategically tackle health concerns and rehabilitate the affected ecosystems along the Cunningham Creek and Laucala Bay.
