GETTING FURTHER INTO ELECTROTECHNOLOGY The Electrotechnology students from our earlier item (Please see Getting into Electrotechnology below) are progressing well and have been given an opportunity to broaden their knowledge by a visit to the DeMaher Factory in Port Kembla. De Maher generously invited the group, along with teachers Jamie Kitteringham and Steve Lawson, to spend a day at their factory checking out each step in the construction of purpose built prefabricated portable buildings. Students were able to witness and/or participate in: Site specific induction Hazard identification/risk assessment Planning – engineering drawings, specifications and Construction – each of the following stages for deMaher product: • Formwork • Steel fixing • Electrical rough-in • Concreting • Waterproofing/painting • Fit-out • Fitting of dors/windows • Despatch/delivery Three of the current deMaher staff are Gymea TAFE graduates indicating the Company’s commitment to TAFE as a vocational training institution.
