GHYAs Health Alert !!! Dear Hyderabadis, Please read , understand, implement and share with All to be safe from Swine Flu Virus. Prevention is Better then Cure. What is the SWINE FLU virus? The virus is an influenza A virus called H1N1, with DNA from avian, swine and human H1N1 viruses. It has evolved the ability to pass easily from one person to another, unlike other swine viruses that only occasionally infect people. How does it spread? The virus spreads by sneezing, coughing and contact with droplets. Though the virus originates from pigs, experts and the World Health Organization have ruled out risk of infection from eating well-cooked pork. How is it different from the common flu? The swine flu has common flu symptoms such as sudden fever, muscle aches, sore throat and dry cough. But it is now causing severe vomiting and diarrhoea as well. This virus strain is confusing because it is an H1N1 -- a type that has been around since the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic that killed at least 40 million people globally. In 1968, a Hong Kong flu pandemic killed about one million people globally. Should we be worried? The WHO has declared the current H1N1 as a public health emergency of international concern and raised the threat level to a pandemic, that is, a global epidemic of new disease. How many lives has it claimed in India? Since its first outbreak in 2009, the virus has killed more than 4,000 people so far. In 2014, 16 deaths were reported in undivided Andhra Pradesh. This year, nine swine flu deaths have occurred so far. How can we prevent spread of the virus? Washing hands has proven to be the best way to keep infection at bay. Experts say face masks, especially the surgical masks now seen on the streets, offer very little protection. Viruses can float on little particles of spit or mucous no further than three to six feet, but they then settle on surfaces and be transferred to the mouth, eyes or nose via contact. Getting a seasonal anti-flu vaccine could help. Denizens are advised to be alert and report to a hospital in case of swine flu-like symptoms. Please Share this valuable information as it could safe many lifes... PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE !! Issued in Public interest by :GHYA M A Irfan, Chairman Greater Hyderabad Youth Association
