GIANT RAINBOW FLAG INSTALLED AT TAYLOR SQUARE October the 8th, 2014. By Cec Busby Source: GayNewsNetwork.au City of Sydney Council has made good on its promise to fly a rainbow flag at Taylor Square as a precursor to a more permanent symbol of LGBTI pride at the site. This afternoon council workers were seen unfurling the new flag which now flies 6metres high above Sydney’s gay heartland. Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the rainbow flag was an international symbol of pride and would help reinforce the area’s rich LGBTI culture and history. “Sydney has the largest LGBTI community in Australia and while we develop a permanent public artwork this flag will say loud and clear that Sydney is a safe, inclusive city for everyone,” the Lord Mayor said. “Since the removal of the much-loved rainbow crossing at Taylor Square, many people have expressed a desire for a significant artwork to celebrate Sydney’s LGBTI community.” Whilst city staff are working hard on the promise of delivering a permanent tribute to the community, council suggested the erection of a rainbow flag in the interim. Moore said she wants the new artwork to bring as much joy as the rainbow crossing did. “It should serve as a landmark, a destination and a meeting place – something people will want to photograph and share with others. Most importantly, it should celebrate what has been achieved and remind us how much there is still to do, “ Moore said.
