GIG ALERT: BASS CAMP Festival in Bangalore, Delhi, Mumbai and Pune. The last couple of times we’ve attended KRUNKs quarterly Bass Camp Festival at Blue FROG in Mumbai, we’ve danced ourselves into such a trance that a bartender or service staff member has politely asked to leave the club’s premises for overstaying our welcome. This is always after the music is switched off and the bar is wiped clean but never past the official city curfew. But we’re never alone—the venue only empties out after the last song has been belted out and just as well, because drum and bass music fans are almost as notorious as psytrancers for dancing hard all night long. Arora, who runs Mumbai-based artiste management and booking agency Krunk, set up the Bass Camp Festival in February 2010 to promote bass-heavy electronic music genres like drum and bass, dubstep, glitch hop and drumstep, when all of them still qualified as “underground” sounds. As the genre grows stronger in popularity (featured in Hindi film music too these days), so does Arora’s tribe of bassheads. This weekend’s edition of Bass Camp Festival, the 12th one so far, features Belgian-born musician Alix Perez and offers the perfect opportunity to join in all the fun. Past editions of the Bass Camp Festival have been massive hits—expect more of the same. The Bass Camp Festival takes place on Friday 31 May from 10pm at Blue FROG, Lower Parel, Mumbai (entry Rs800); on Saturday 31 May from 9.30pm at blueFrog, Mehrauli, Delhi (entry Rs800); and on Sunday 1 June from 9pm at High Spirits, Ghorpadi Gaon, Pune (entry fee of Rs300 includes a free Heineken beer).
