GIS Technician position with the Biodiversity Research Institute (Maine) website: briloon.org Salary: TBD Start Date: 07/30/2013 Last Date to Apply: 08/28/2013 Description Biodiversity Research Institute (BRI) seeks an energetic GIS technician to provide GIS mapping, data management, and analysis support for our non-profit organization located in Gorham, ME. Dedicated to assessing emerging threats to wildlife and ecosystems through collaborative research, BRI has 15 years of experience using scientific findings to advance environmental awareness and inform decision makers. BRI receives governmental (federal, state, and local), foundation, and industry funding to perform scientific research throughout the continental U.S. and abroad. The GIS technician will report to the Data Management Director in support of data management tasks and GIS mapping for BRI. The employee will be responsible for day-to-day mapping needs for the organization to include study and planning maps, maps for reports and manuscripts, and maps for communication such as the web and outreach materials. The GIS technician will also perform geospatial analysis and modeling to support projects requiring it. The candidate will also be expected to be very involved in data management and work closely with the Data Management Director to organize, compile, and QA/QC data as necessary. Some programming in Python or other scripting language may be occasionally required to assist with data processing and map production. Some limited fieldwork will be required in support of BRI’s many research projects. The candidate will be expected to travel and work in this capacity, sometimes in remote and difficult environments. This is full-time, 40 hour per week position. Please submit a letter of interest, CV, and 2-3 sample. Qualifications Qualified candidate must have a Bachelor’s degree in biology, environmental studies, or closely related field with at least two years of prior work experience in a similar capacity. Geographers with experience in the sciences will also be considered. Successful candidates must possess excellent mapping and analytical skills, be detail-oriented, a track record of excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and be proficient with ArcGIS 10.0 or later and Microsoft Access and Excel. Good programming skills in Python, Visual Basic, and/or other languages, while not required, will be beneficial to this position. In addition to strong technical skills, the successful candidate must possess a genuine interest in supporting BRI’s mission and a strong desire to be part of a non-profit work environment.
