[GLFP2013] Spring Semester, 2013 - Study Abroad Preparation Course“Self and Society in Global Perspective” (from staff) "Self and Society in Global Perspective" is a course designed specifically for the 10 GLFP students. It is held by Prof. Paul Watt on every Tuesday, 6th period. The course description is as follows: Facing a world that is fundamentally unstable, societies around the globe have labored to create well-ordered and lasting social structures and to cultivate individuals who can maintain or constructively transform these social structures over time. Most often these visions of the ideal society and the ideal individual are transmitted within a society’s religious and philosophical traditions. In this course, we will examine several religious and philosophical traditions that have shaped the thinking of millions and millions of people around the world. These traditions include Islam, Christianity, Confucianism, Buddhism and Shinto. We will be reading and discussing basic texts from these traditions, looking in particular at their views of the ideal society and the ideal individual.
