GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION Ive posted these before but am re-upping them because they are early notes for the global release of Star Wars. Though George had designed Star Wars with toy merchandise in mind for his profit, the studios took the old fashioned route of looking at their film distribution for their profit/loss. 20th Century knew that if their American film release didnt recoup, the backup was foreign and TV. Star Wars didnt have any bankable name other than perhaps Alec Guiness in foreign, but the budget of the film was low enough the studio felt comfortable with recouping cost because of the robots and other fun science fiction goodies. Star Wars was greenlit in Dec 76 because 2001 had just broken even and was going into profit, proving there was a market for science fiction films. In other words, the low budget genre film could recoup from its American genre fan audience, and if that didnt work, there was the backup of a global science fiction market.
