GLOBAL NEWS UPDATES… A&R Worldwide News! Carter Armstrong, former Sr. VP Motion Picture Music, Warner Bros. Pictures has been named the new Head of Film Music at Lionsgate. Armstrong told A&R Worldwide, “After more than 14 amazing years, I have left my family at Warner Bros. Pictures to become Head of Music at Lionsgate. I will miss Warner Bros. Pictures and am profoundly grateful to everyone there for an incredible experience. Now, I look forward to working with everyone from my new position at Lionsgate.” Songwriter John Ryan has signed an exclusive, worldwide publishing agreement with Big Deal Music and BMG Chrysalis US under their joint venture. John Ryan has co-written multiple One Direction hit songs including “Best Song Ever” (Hot 100 No.2, over one million singles sold in the US alone) and “Story of My Life.” Additionally, he has co-written cuts by Cody Simpson, JLS, Fifth Harmony, Avicii and Olly Murs among many others. Jake Miller : After releasing over 40 videos on YouTube, a 43-date sold out tour and a No.1 debut on the iTunes hip hop charts with his second EP The Road Less Traveled (E1 Music), Jake Miller has recently signed with Warner Bros. Records. The 20 year old blends pop and hip-hop and his current single “Collide” has been receiving airplay support from SiriusXM’s 20 On 20 as well as spins on WKSE Buffalo, WAKS Cleveland, WHYI Miami and many more. Warner Bros. Records (WBR) announced last week two additional members of its Brand Partnerships & Commercial Licensing team. Ryan Barkan is appointed Vice President of Creative Synch Licensing and Lila Gerson is appointed Senior Director of Brand Partnerships. Both report to Lori Feldman, Executive Vice President of Brand Partnership & Music Licensing. The Eleven Seven Music Group has signed an exclusive, worldwide administration agreement with BMG Chrysalis US, covering both master and publishing rights. The companies will work together to secure synch opportunities for artists on Eleven Seven’s roster. The Eleven Seven Music Group is a full service physical, digital and mobile record label group operating with global sales, distribution and marketing capabilities. The group comprises award-winning rock label Eleven Seven Music and Alt-Rock label, Five Seven Music. Eleven Seven Music Group was founded by industry veteran Allen Kovac in 2006. Gabriela Lopes has been appointed Senior Vice President Global Insight, Universal Music Group effective January 1, 2014. Based in London, Lopes reports jointly to Andrew Kronfeld, President Global Marketing and Rob Wells, President Global Digital. Lopes joins Universal Music from international music industry association IFPI where she has been Director of Market Research for the last six years. In this new global role she will lead Universal Music’s insight team who manage one of the most powerful and effective data sets and research capabilities in the music industry. As well as utilizing sales and other commercial data the insight tools include analysis gathered from over a million interviews with consumers around the world, delivering unique detail into the evolving attitudes and behaviour of today’s music fans. Reporting directly to Tunetribe CEO William Haighton, Swagers is a respected music, film and TV industry veteran who joins the company from his previous role of Regional Director at digital communications agency Way to Blue. Tasked with supporting the company’s existing creative and brand partnerships and seeking further commercial opportunities Swagers, whose appointment is effective immediately, will work closely with General Manager Terry Boland to augment and implement Tunetribe’s ongoing growth strategy. UK independent label Xtra Mile (original home to Frank Turner, The Rifles) has signed US punk rock band Against Me! for the world excluding North America and Australia. The band will release their new album, Transgender Dysphoria Blues in 2014. The long-player is the follow-up to the band’s previous full-length album, White Crosses. Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG) and Glassnote Records affiliate, Insieme Music Publishing (formerly known as Four Song Night Publishing), have extended their exclusive publishing administration agreement, as announced recently by Evan Lamberg, President of North America, UMPG. Through the deal, UMPG will continue to administer the publishing rights of the existing catalog of songs that Insieme controls through Insieme Music Publishing as well as future works for the world (excluding Australia/New Zealand, Republic of Fiji and Papau New Guinea). The catalog features music spanning a wide spectrum of genres by both established and new artists, including the newest addition to Glassnote Records and Insieme Music Publishing, Panama Wedding, led by Peter Kirk. Warner/Chappell Music, the music publishing arm of Warner Music Group, recently announced that it has signed a worldwide publishing agreement with renowned Megadeth singer, songwriter, and guitarist Dave Mustaine. Effective immediately, Warner/Chappell will administer Mustaine’s songwriting from Megadeth’s recently released album Super Collider, as well as future songwriting. Mustaine stated, “I am very excited about this new partnership with Warner/Chappell. I am glad to be reuniting with a hero of mine, Jon Platt, and industry legend Greg Sowders. I have never been happier.” Nielsen’s recent 2013 Music Report 360° shows that 68% of US consumers have streamed music online in the last year, paid streamers spend 54% more on digital albums/tracks and CDs and 31% of streamers purchase music impulsively. These stats just touch on the insights Nielsen has put together on how US fans are buying, watching, discovering and listening to music. Jerry Boulding : A&R Worldwide sends its deepest condolences to our friends at All Access and the family members of the late Jerry Boulding, Editor, Urban/UAC, All Access who passed away last week following a short-term illness. Jerry was 75 years young and is survived by his wife Maggie, son Aaron and granddaughter Sage of Long Beach, CA. Jerry was loved by many and will always be remembered by those who were blessed to have known him. Fairwood Music Publishing has announced the signing of singer-songwriter Carrie Haber for a long-term global publishing deal. Hailing from Malta and influenced by artists and writers like Tori Amos, Regina Spektor and Imogen Heap, Haber has worked with Grammy-winning producer Steve Orchard and has supported major artists including Bob Geldof and The Feeling. Our friend Ritch Esra, Publisher, The Music Registry tells us that it’s been a fairly active and as always, interesting last couple of weeks in the A&R community. The main news has been the addition of the new A&R staff at Sony. Shawn ‘Tubby’ Holiday joins Columbia from RCA and Isaac Green has been promoted to Sr. VP A&R. Publishing veteran Shalik Berry joins Epic in Los Angeles and Michael Klein joins Epic in Los Angeles as A&R Operations. Tayla Elitzer joins Capitol in Los Angeles as well. In New York, Matt Darduini joins Mercury as Sr. VP A&R. In the UK, Pino Pumilla exits Polydor to join BMG/Chrysalis and Hugo Bedford exits Atlantic.
