GLORY DAYS: George Clyde Kell was born August 23, 1922 in Swifton Arkansas. His major league career began on September 28,1943 and ended on September 14,1957. He batted and threw right handed and played mostly in the infield for the following teams during his career: Philadelphia Athletics 1943-46 Detroit Tigers 1946-52 Boston Red Sox 1952-54 Chicago White Sox 1954-56 Baltimore Orioles 1956-57 Kell was a student at Arkansas State University where the place where the team now plays is called Kell Field at Tomlinson Stadium. He was solid on both offense and defense and was a sure handed fielder. he ended his career with a batting average of .306 that included a league leading .343 in 1949. he also had 2,054 hits for his career and that included a league leading 218 in 1950 and 191 in 1951. he led the league in doubles in 1950 with 56 and 1951 with 36,in addition he also led the league in sacrifice hits in 1946 and 1956 with 15 and 14 respectively. On defense he had 1,825 putouts as a 3rd baseman which is 17th all time. That figure includes a league leading186 in 1945 and 141 in 1946. He had 3,303 assists which is 29th all time and he led the league in assists from 1945 to 1947 with 345,267 and 333. He also led the league in assists in1951 with 310. His fielding percentage led the league in 1945-46,1950-51,1953 and 1955-56. His career fielding percentage of .969 is 9th best all time. He was a ten time All Star(1947-1954,1956-67) and he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1983 by the Veterans Committee .He passed away in Swifton Arkansas on March 24,2009 at the age of 86
