GLORY DAYS; George Edward Waddell was born October 13, 1876 in the town of Bradford Pennsylvania. He was a left handed pitcher who made his major league debut on September 18,1897 and pitched in the big leagues until August 1,1910. During that time he pitched for the following teams: Louisville Colonels 1897,1899 Pittsburgh Pirates 1900-1901 Chicago Orphans 1901 Philadelphia Athletics 1902-1907 St Louis Browns 1908-1910 Waddell while a good pitcher had numerous quirks that helped him wear out his welcome with the teams he played with. He was not dependable and sometimes would leave the mound or the dugout to follow fire trucks on the way to a fire. he also wrestled alligators and was easily distracted if a fan held up a puppy and/or pbjects that shined. That being said Waddell did put up some pretty impressive numbers and was involved in some memorable pitching contests. Waddell made the last out in the perfect game pitched by Cy Young on 5/5/1904. In 1905 he beat Young in a game that saw each pitcher go the full 20 innings. Later on the two pitching great went the full 13 innings in a game that ended in a 0-0 tie. Waddell was the eague leader n wins i 1905 with 27. He twic led the AL in ERA(100-2.37 and 1905-1.48). He won the AL pitching Triple Crown in 1905 and was a six time league leader in strikeouts(1902-210,1903-302,1904-349,1905-287,1906-196 and 1907-232). His career ERA was 2.16(11th all time) and he als had a total of 2,316 strikeouts for his career to go with 50 shutouts. he passed away on April 1,1914 at the age of 37 from tuberculosis. he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1946 by the Veterans Committee
