GLUTEN AND DEPRESSION / ANXIETY Scientific research is proving a direct link between diet, depression and anxiety. One major discovery has been the direct link of gluten to depression and anxiety. Processed foods, packaged foods, preservatives, additives, nitrates, sulfites, hormones, antibiotics, fast food, junk food, in summary the American/WESTERN diet, is a diet for depression and anxiety. Gluten is the protein in starches, wheat and wheat related grasses and if you suffer from depression and anxiety you NEED to QUIT gluten from your diet to aid recovery. Gluten is found in alot of your everyday foods; Gluten is found in all wheat related products, bread, cakes, cookies, bagels, cereal, pasta, beer, even soy sauce, ice cream, and ketchup have gluten added to them. Corn and rice, although technically not gluten products, have similar proteins and should also be eliminated or restricted too. How does gluten cause depression? Gluten causes depression anxiety by producing inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract, triggering an autoimmune response to the gluten protein which releases cytokines, which then enter the brain and produce inflammation in the brain, leading to depression anxiety. This gluten autoimmune cytokine response can affect other organs besides the brain, including joints, lungs, kidneys, pancreas, heart, and more. Which is why gluten is associated with a whole host of conditions including, asthma, arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, and brain related autism, alzheimers and depression anxiety. Gluten wheat, rice and corn, also cause depression anxiety by feeding harmful bacteria such as H. Pylori, which crowds out good probiotic bacteria necessary for vitamin absorption and gut health. Which is why i stress taking a high quality good bacteria supplement and vitamin/mineral supplements. Once your gut is damaged from gluten, it will continue to enter your bloodstream and invoke an auto immune response producing depression anxiety. There is no scientific doubt that gluten can cause depression anxiety. A study done over 60 years ago, found that rates of schizophrenia during World War II went down, as wheat was rationed in the general population. A 1984 study found only 2 cases of schizophrenia, out of a population of 65,000 pre-Westernized South Pacific residents, who did not consume wheat products, and once westernized with a wheat diet saw their rates climb to western levels. If you continue to look into scientific research relating to gluten and depression, you will find overwhelming proof that gluten can cause, exacerbate and prolong depression, aswell as many other mental illnesses. Stay tuned for my next article where ill recommend supplements and foods that scientifically help reduce, prevent and eliminate depression aswell as getting your digestive system and all your bodies systems, back to optimum health.
