GLUTEN sensitivity in people who are not diagnosed with celiacs? - TopicsExpress

GLUTEN sensitivity in people who are not diagnosed with celiacs? Weve seen in previous research that removing gluten containing foods could have a positive impact on IBS... hmmm... but the mechanism was not understood. Was the answer really in gluten or was it something else? Now with a better understanding and more extensive research, we have very good evidence that its not the removal of GLUTEN that helps relieve symptoms but rather the removal of FODMAPS within gluten containing foods (and found in other non gluten containing carbohydrates) and not the gluten itself. What does this mean? It means that in people who are not diagnosed with celiacs, the removal of gluten containing foods may help (but not because of the removal of gluten) but symptoms could be improved even more if all the high FODMAP foods were reduced or removed from the diet. It also means that if you have a better understanding of the mechanisms that lead to IBS in non celiac disease patients, you can have better approach and better results. Is this supported by research? You bet. A double blind placebo crossover study (one of the most powerful types of clinical trials you can do) explains it all here ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23648697
