GM probably should have incorporated the superior Saab ignition - TopicsExpress

GM probably should have incorporated the superior Saab ignition design into as many of its other vehicles as possible. No keys hanging/dangling means less wear and tear on the ignition switch. In fact, GM should have kept Saab as a division----with the premier safety engineers in the industry. Saab has always put safety as the critical priority in designing their cars. Hopefully the new owner of Saab will maintain that excellence and hopefully they will sell Saabs again in the U.S. in the future. There was so much potential with the Saab line and GM didnt have the executives who were bright enough to understand how to capitalize on it. They were like deer in headlights trying to understand how to position Saab----sort of like theyre deer in headlights now, trying to explain why nothing was ever done once they knew the death danger of the Cobalt ignitions. GM had so much potential in the early 2000s to regain lost market share----as recently as 2008/09, when the economy was at its worst----good leadership could have taken advantage of the situation instead of panicking and dumping all of their divisions as they did----leaving them with 3 divisions and GMC Trucks, which is nothing more than Chevy trucks rebadged. So they now have Cadillac and Buick----two expensive lines with some overlap. And Chevy, some overlap with cheaper Buicks. Entry level and two higher priced divisions with nothing in between. It was so clear how they could have reorganized things inexpensively without drastically slicing away at the heritage of Pontiac and Saab. They could have folded Saturn into Saab, killing off Saturn but giving Saab a full model line for the first time (Astra would have been the new Saab 9-1 or 9-2 and Sky would have been the new Saab Sonnet). Hummer could have maintained a model or two and been sold through Pontiac dealers, with a leaner Pontiac line focused on performance cars---sedans and a new Firebird based on the Camaro. People still miss Pontiac and Saab Cars. So wasteful and so incompetent.
