GMA NEWS: DEC. 4, 2013 Phivolcs: Magnitude-5.7 quake hits Davao area, aftershocks expected (Updated 9:56 a.m.) A magnitude-5.7 quake jolted the Davao Oriental area early Wednesday, with state seismologists warning of possible aftershocks. But Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology head Renato Solidum Jr. said there is no chance of a tsunami as the quake is not powerful enough to generate one. “Wala naman, hindi ito ganoon kalakas para mag-generate ng tsunami (It is not powerful enough to generate a tsunami),” Solidum said in an interview on dzBB radio. Phivolcs’ updated bulletin said the quake occurred at 7:58 a.m., with the epicenter at 57 km southeast of Mati, Davao Oriental. It said the quake was tectonic and was felt at: Intensity V: Davao City; Mati, Davao Oriental Intensity IV: Digos City; Don Marcelino & Malita, Davao del Sur Intensity III: Butuan City; Kidapawan City; Tagum City; Panabo City; Compostela Valley; Matanao, Davao del Sur Intensity II: San Francisco, Agusan del Sur; Cotabato City; Gen. Santos City; Koronadal City; Polomolok, South Cotabato; Alabel Sarangani Solidum said aftershocks are expected, but damage is not likely. The United States Geological Survey said the quake’s epicenter was at: 1 km east-northeast of Tibanbang 31 km south-southeast of Lupon 37 km south-southwest of Mati 60 km south-southeast of Pantukan 926 km west of Koror Town, Palau —KG/LBG, GMA News
