GOD IS A FORWARD LOOKING GOD! Nostalgia has its place because it - TopicsExpress

GOD IS A FORWARD LOOKING GOD! Nostalgia has its place because it can act as a magnet to bring us back to God. An old hymn, a particular message, a supernatural healing, the pouring out of the Shekinah of God in a vigil, you name it, they can all work to prod us to self examine and renew our vows. Music and poetry can also become intertwined with our very soul. They grasp and express feelings and moods we cannot verbalize ourselves as we face the harsh realities of life. Nostalgia triggers within us a sense of euphoria as we relive those past experiences. Nostalgia is not a bad thing because it can bring us a sense of joy and comfort. The danger lies in idealizing the past so much we yearn to bring it the present. ( Also, if we’re not careful, the dwelling on past negative experiences can cause a sense of melancholy and subsequent depression.) Yes, violence abounds. Yes our values are melting away faster than butter on a hot skillet. Yes the world is in turmoil. Many of us have become “shell shocked” at the everyday atrocities seen in the media. Yes, the corporate church, in certain circles, deny the power of the Gospel. But God has always had a faithful remnant. This is also God’s opportune time to revive His church for what may very well be the last harvest. We are reminded in Eccl. 3:1 “To everything is a season, a time for every purpose under the sun.” 35-40 years I wouldn’t ever dream that I could communicate with you without picking up a paper and pen plus a stamped envelope to send this reflection. We change and go through changes. But God never changes, however he changes everything to fulfill his divine purpose. Psalm 100:5 says “For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.” God uses the fundamental values of tradition and culture to reach people. As we change, God remains relevant and contemporary. We should be also without compromising the fullness of the Gospel. Lamentations 3:22- 23 says that because of his love, his blessings are new every morning. Let’s be careful not miss God’s blessings for today because our minds and hearts are in the past.
