GOLANI-an Israeli infantry brigade that is subordinated to the 36th Division and traditionally associated with the Northern Command. It is one of the five regular service infantry brigades of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Its symbol is a green tree on a yellow background, and its soldiers wear a brown beret. It is one of the most highly decorated infantry units in the IDF. The brigade consists of five battalions, including two which it kept from its inception (12th and 13th), one transferred from Givati (51st), and two special forces battalions. Although the brigade is known for insubordination problems, two of its commanders, Mordechai Gur and Gabi Ashkenazi, became IDF Chiefs of Staff. Many more reached the rank of Aluf (Major General). During Operation Protective Edge, 13 Golani soldiers were killed on July 20, 2014 in Gaza. In the morning, an M113 armoured personnel carrier carrying soldiers from Golanis 13th Battalion drove over an explosive device and caught fire, killing seven who were on board the vehicle, the others died in several different incidents. The commander of the Golani Brigade, Colonel Ghassan Alian, an Israeli Druze and the first non-Jewish commander of the brigade, was injured in an exchange of fire in Gaza that day.
