GOLF NEWS / MDGA Archie Preston Mixed Foursomes Quarter Finals / Turton lose 4-3 at home to Leyland G.C. / Tues 27th August Turton’s progress in the MDGA Archie Preston Mixed Foursomes came to an abrupt end with a 4-3 home defeat to Leyland G.C. on Tuesday evening. Captain Clive Howarth & Lady Captain Christine Studholme were first out and secured a fine 2 & 1 win, but not after their opponents had put up a real fight after finding themselves 6 down at one stage. Kyran Ingham & Jean Haigh then lost their match 3 & 2 as did John Drabble & Laura Howarth by the same margin giving Leyland a 2-1 lead after 3 matches. Adam Bullough & Janet Hewitt then lost their match 10 & 8 leaving Leyland looking for one more win to secure their place in the semi finals. Jeff Dykins & Christine Gobin then lost their match 6 & 5 to give Leyland an unassailable 4 -1 lead. The remaining two matches were both going in Turton’s favour with John O’Hara & Jennifer Jones and Stephen Greenough & Hilary Hibbert both standing at 3 up when they were called in. The matches were played in great spirit with the Leyland players all praising the excellent condition of the course. Captain Clive Howarth and Lady Captain Christine Studholme, while clearly disappointed at the result, would like to congratulate the Leyland Captain Donald Johnston and Lady Captain Dorothy Dean and the rest of the Leyland team on their well deserved win and we wish them every success in their semi final and hope that they now go on to pick up the trophy. Thanks also to all of the Turton Men & Ladies who helped us reach this years quarter finals and we now look forward to next seasons Archie Preston under the leadership of our 2014 Captains elect, Graham Wright and Jean Haigh.
