=GONZALO UPDATE - 2:15 PM / OCTOBER 18. 2014= Good Saturday afternoon, everyone! I just wanted to pass along another update for you on Hurricane Gonzalo, and how it will impact Newfoundlands eastern side later tonight and early Sunday morning. Here is my latest video briefing on the storm: youtu.be/JIRyPjVfAcE CURRENT STATS: CATEGORY: 1 WINDS: 150 km/h GUSTS: 185 km/h MOVEMENT: NNE at 41 km/h PRESSURE: 966 mb Gonzalo will continue heading toward Newfoundland and will pass the Island during the early morning hours of Sunday...between about 3 AM and 10 AM. The track, as I was leaning towards the last couple of days, looks to remain just off the east or southeast coast of the Avalon Peninsula, or a little farther offshore. This keeps the hurricane force winds offshore, but some gusts near or over 100 km/h are possible for the eastern and southern Avalon early Sunday morning. The bigger deal with this system will be rainfall. Rain amounts look to be in the 35 to 50 mm range, with some areas seeing locally more. The problem isnt necessarily the amount of rain, its that the rain will fall in a very short period of time. If you live near a small creek or know of a particular spot thats prone to flood, keep an eye on Sunday morning. The ground has a tough time absorbing a lot water that quickly. The weather will quiet down by lunch time on Sunday, and a mix of sun and cloud will be found during the afternoon. Temperatures for many of us peak in the upper teens. So... enjoy the second half of the day. To sum everything up in 3 points: 1. TIMING: The impacts from the storm will be felt from 2 AM to 12 PM Sunday. Sunday afternoon is actually shaping up to be quite nice. Sun and cloud, temperatures in the upper teens! 2. The heaviest rain will fall between 3 AM and 10 AM Sunday, and could should be in the 35 to 50+ mm rain for much of the Avalon. Less west and much less west of the Avalon. 3. The highest winds will occur between 6 and 9 AM Sunday. They will be highest on the east coast and southeast coast of the Avalon Peninsula. Gusts may peak near 100 to 120 km/h, with sustained winds near 70-90 km/h. The winds will quickly fall back after 9 AM. ----- The forecast may change a bit between now and tonight, and Ill continue monitoring the storm closely. Look for another update later today. Cheers, Meteorologist Eddie Sheerr
