The other side of the Cemetery (White Side) already has a Marker and its own by the City. The Black side is Private Own and in need of a little TLC and I would Love to see it looking GREAT when God Bless it with that Pretty HALO called a Historical Marker And it turns 112 years old. Georgia Southern is Going to Help out, Im going to ask the Funeral Homes, Churches, Citizens with Family Members Buried out there too. I NEED PEOPLE WHO ARE REALLY GOING TO SHOW UP. TO SIGN UP. SPRING IS 90 DAYS AWAY. The History: The Colored People Cemetery located off Highway 80 and East Olliff St. in Statesboro, Georgia called ‘The Colored People Cemetery because it was behind the White Eastside Cemetery was founded in 1903. There were no cemeteries to properly bury blacks without going to country Churchs, so a plot of land was purchased by some of the local blacks of Statesboro, Georgia. It was those founding volunteers that looked after and maintained the cemetery. When the land was first obtained senior citizens purchased plots for their families. Those that could not purchase in full would acquire their plots by paying little at a time. Plots were sold for $5.00 to $10.00. No records were kept because the plots were sold with the understanding that the purchasers would keep record of where their families were buried. This practice was continued thoughout the years.
