GOOD NEWS FROM BOMET COUNTY - Our Sister County A medical physicist named Jimmex Othieno visited the Longisa Hospital this past Friday on a fact-finding mission. The consultant was out to gather data for the establishment of what is expected to be the first cancer centre of its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa. The assessment of the proposed site by the consultant, is the direct result of the support Governor Isaac Ruto received from MD Anderson, the largest and most sophisticated cancer hospital in the world, when he visited the US in July. The pledge for support to set up a diagnostic and treatment cancer centre in Bomet County came from no less a personage than Prof Geoff Ibbott himself, the Chairman of Radiation Physics Department of the University of Texas (MD Anderson is an integral part of the University of Texas). He identified Jimmex, once a student of his in the 1980s doing post-graduate studies in America, and dispatched him to Bomet to begin the process. Jimmex is based in Nairobi and the founder of Africa Radiology Technology Institute. Said Jimmex after his extensive assessment of Longisa Hospital, “Watch this space; with a cancer facility of the kind Prof Ibbott has in mind, Bomet will revolutionise cancer management and treatment in this part of the world. Not even Kenyatta National Hospital will rival such a facility. Hence, investors should begin to build hotel facilities as Longisa (and Bomet for the matter)! For, many escorting their loved ones for treatment will spend a lot of time close to the centre as happens in Houston where MD Anderson is situated.”
