Court orders police to pay MASSOB N2m compensation for illegal raid March 18, 2014 A High Court sitting in Abaklaiki, Ebonyi State has ordered the police to pay the Movement for Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) in Ebonyi N2 million as damages for raiding its office in the state. MASSOB had last year dragged the state police commissioner to court for illegally raiding its regional office at Abakaliki. In a case brought before the court by a member of MASSOB, Mr. John Nwifuru, for infringing on the fundamental rights of members of the group to personal liberties, the presiding judge, Justice F. C. Inya-Agha in her judgment yesterday said the police had infringed on the rights of MASSOB, saying the incessant threats of arrest, harassments, intimidation of MASSOB members and confiscation of the properties of the group was unlawful and a violation of the members fundamental rights as guaranteed by Sections 34, 35 (1), 40 and 44 of the constitution. The judge also ordered police to release the items taken away from MASSOB office along. 9 Hatchery Road on October 25, 2013 which include 2, 700 identity cards worth N1, 000 each, 10 plastic chairs, five handsets, flag pole and sign board, N170, 000 cash, five MASSOB uniforms, six pairs of boot and belt. She also directed the police authorities to tender an unreserved public apology to be published in the national dailies.
