GOOD NEWS to share : Dependents of expats CAN work :-) #Jeddah #KSA #Nitaqat Quelling all rumors, the Ministry of Education (MOE) has finally decided to allow dependents of foreigners to work as teachers at private and international schools in the Kingdom. In a circular sent to all departments of education across the Kingdom, Deputy Minister of Education Dr. Khaled Al-Sabti has issued necessary instructions in this regard. It was stated precisely in the circular that this concession shall be subjected to a set of conditions, including those pertaining to Saudization. The Kingdom’s private education sector can now heave a big sigh of relief with the new directive, as the Nitaqat Saudization drive raised a big question mark on the fate of hundreds of private and international schools, of which a sizable number of teachers are housewives who are not in the sponsorship of their employers. The minister’s directive is in line with a nod from Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah to an agreement reached between the ministries of interior and education in this respect. The Ministry of Education has approved the recommendations prepared by an expert panel with regard to regulating the private education sector as part of the ongoing correction process. According to the recommendations, private schools can hire dependents of foreigners instead of recruiting teachers from abroad with a condition that there are no Saudi men and women who have been registered with the ministry for the designated job. Another condition is that these dependents, including wives and daughters, need to pass a qualifying test approved by ministry. Dependents above the age of 60 are unqualified for appointment. A valid residency permit (iqama), required qualification and specialization in the respective discipline, and medical fitness are other conditions. Those who are under the sponsorship of another employer or those who were convicted in a criminal case are also not entitled to get a position. Meanwhile, Awad Al-Maliki, Assistant Director of Private and Foreign Education at the Department of Education in the Eastern Province, told Okaz/Saudi Gazette that King Abdullah’s approval for this landmark move is aimed at further promoting the Kingdom’s foreign education sector. “This will help qualified dependents of foreigners to take advantage of the ample job opportunities in this vital sector in the absence of any Saudis to take up these positions.” The Education Department, he said, will soon start putting into force the directive after working out modalities in this regard.
