It was borrowed into Old English as the term for the Irish who had settled in the northwest of Britain from the 5th - 6th centuries. Isidore of Seville in 580AD wrote Scotia and Hibernia are the same country (Isidore, lib. xii. c. 6). During the course of the 9th century, Scotia began to appear as the name for the region, replacing the older name Caledonia, which was also named for the inhabitants at the time.
