GOODWILL EASTER SEALS OF THE GULF COAST Job Description TITLE: Director of Sustainability DATE WRITTEN: 6/2014 DEPARTMENT: Business Services SUPERVISED BY: AVP Business Services SUPERVISES: Production Supervisor, Weekend Supervisor STATUS: Hourly, Full-time Mission Contribution: Create jobs for people with disabilities and others with barriers to employment by providing recycling services. Also, helps promote GESGC’s commitment to protecting the environment through recycling and other sustainability initiatives. Function: To manage GESGC’s Going Green initiatives including its internal recycling and sustainability initiatives, the West Mobile Recycling Center, and other community recycling services. Essential Functions: (must be able to perform these functions, with or without a reasonable accommodation). 1. Provide world class customer service including effective communication with internal and external customers. 2. Promotes GESGC’s commitment to protecting the environment through speaking engagements and networking opportunities. 3. Recruits customers and partners for GESGC’s various recycling programs. 4. Cultivates and maintains strong relationships with vendors and suppliers of recyclable materials in order to generate maximum revenue while minimizing expenses. 5. Ensures assigned programs, projects and other initiatives meet or exceed goals, objectives and performance measures as established by agency, funding/regulatory organizations, other customers and stakeholders. 6. Researches, identifies and secures opportunities for expansion of services including grant opportunities, service contracts, and/or collaboration with other industries, employers and businesses. 7. Communicates regularly with supervisor, other leadership staff, and partners as appropriate keeping them informed of progress, issues and status of key departmental functions. 8. Research equipment/ services for purchase based on product specifications, price, and service performance. 9. Oversees the operation of the West Mobile Recycling Center. a. Directly supervises the Production Supervisor and Weekend Supervisor, and indirectly supervises Recycle Techs, Sorters, and volunteers (including those providing court-ordered community services). b. Coordinates the delivery of recyclable material from various internal and external collection points. c. Negotiates and executes the sale and shipment of processed recyclable material to various vendors. d. Creates policies and procedures for the collection, processing, and shipping of recyclable materials. e. Develops, trains, and enforces safety procedures that include but are not limited to the facility space, recycling equipment, forklifts and Bobcat, and volunteer and student interaction. f. Oversees the environmental education program including enlisting instructors, approving curriculum, and recruiting class trips. g. Ensures that preventative maintenance and repairs are carried out, on all equipment, according to manufacturer recommendations and in a manner that protects the validity of warranties. h. Ensures the facility and grounds are clean and well maintained. 10. Stays current on conservation and recycling issues by participating in on-going training and professional development opportunities including seminars, conferences, in-house training and through personal research. 11. Shares information learned with GES leadership, co-workers and partners in an effort to enhance, expand and improve organizational impact and mission focused service delivery. 12. Works with other departments to promote sustainability throughout the organization. a. Monitors the amount of waste produced by the agency and offers suggestions to reduce it. b. Monitors the amount of energy used by the agency and offers suggestions to reduce it. 13. Organizes and inputs data, preparing a variety of reports and summaries to demonstrate program activity and efficiency. 14. Assist with design, production and distribution of marketing materials to promote programs and educate the community. 15. Stays informed of community, agency, and program information through inter-office communications, and attendance at staff meetings. 16. Acts as a positive and professional role model when representing Goodwill Easter Seals. 17. Regular attendance and adherence to scheduled hours, as outlined in Goodwill Easter Seals’ policy, is required. 18. Other duties as assigned. Skills, knowledge and abilities: (these are required to enable job holder to perform the essential functions of the job). 1. Must be able understand the basic operation of recycling equipment and be able to train others. 2. Must have knowledge of recyclable materials and/or grades of various products and how this impacts processing cost and resale of items. 3. Must be able to interact cordially and productively with a variety of people. 4. Must be able to market Goodwill Easter Seals and explain the mission to the general public. 5. Ability to use general office equipment and Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint and Publisher) 6. Must possess good organizational and time management skills. 7. Must be able to take initiative, make decisions and work well with little supervision. 8. Must be able to keep information confidential. 9. Must be able to read, write and communicate clearly in English. 10. Must be able to maintain an effective working relationship with, and among employees and trainees, while motivating them to their best performance. 11. Must be able to work a flexible schedule, occasionally including nights and weekends. 12. Ability to function in a hectic work environment with occasional periods of high stress. 13. Must have a valid drivers’ license, access to a personal vehicle with liability automobile insurance and be insurable through the agency’s insurance carrier in order to drive an agency vehicle. Experience and Education 1. Experience in manufacturing, production, and/or sales. 2. Bachelor’s degree required. Studies in business, environmental services or related field preferred. 3. Experience using Microsoft Word and Excel 4. Minimum of two years of management/supervisory experience. 5. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. 6. Experience in recycling, environmental services, salvage, or waste management, preferred 7. Experience training individuals with disabilities and low socio-economic team members, preferred. 8. Strong problem-solver and decision-maker. Physical Requirements: 1. Must be able to push, bend, and reach. 2. Must be able to lift 40 pounds with assistance. 3. Must be able to engage in prolonged standing 4. Must be able to tolerate dust and excessive noise Working Conditions/Hazards: Most work is conducted in an adequately lighted and ventilated office. Exposure to dust and loud equipment when in the processing area, and possible extreme heat or cold when working outside. Some travel throughout the Gulf Coast area is required.
