GOR MAHIA....0 THIKA UTD......0 The midweek Kenyan Premier League match between Gor Mahia and Thika United ended in a goalless draw at Kasarani. The match started at a slow pace with the visitors appearing as the stronger side with frequent attacks but the Brookside boys were resolute in defence. Gor Mahia’s combination of Dan Sserunkuma, Moses Odhiambo and Edwin Lavatsa ensured that the team remained the favourites in the half to the delight of their fans who turned up in large numbers. Lavatsa launched an attack in the eighth minute, but he handled the ball and was penalized after which Moses Odhiambo and Anthony Akumu’s attempts were also unsuccessful minutes later. David King’atua proved Thika’s asset in the match managing to halt the frequent attacks from Gor Mahia with his speedy runs in midfield forcing the opponents to retreat on several occasions. He paid for his efforts with a booking in the 31st minute after he was adjudged to have fouled Moses Odhiambo at the edge of the area. The second half was an end to end game as both sides bounced back in style to claim possession of the ball, but both sets of defenders were up to task. Gor started off brightly with Sserunkuma’s through pass to Odhiambo whose resulting shot was deflected and the rebound punched away by Indeche in Thika’s goal. Both sides reinforced their attacks bringing in Paul Kiongera and Francis Kahata for Gor and Thika respectively in the 60th minute. The impact was immediate as Kiongera’s header from a Mohammed Musa cross was punched away by Indeche moments later. Kahata also combined well with David Kingatua to set up Simon Mbugua whose pass to Dennis Odhiambo resulted in a goal that was disallowed for offside. This seemed to have motivated the Brookside Boys into the final minutes of the game anad Kahata had a chance to steal all three points only to be denied by a brave tackle by David Owino. The draw ensured that Thika remained at the helm of the league with a three point gap while Gor are third, four behind with two games in hand.
