GOSHEN WATER UTILITY REMINDS RESIDENTS TO GUARD AGAINST FROZEN - TopicsExpress

GOSHEN WATER UTILITY REMINDS RESIDENTS TO GUARD AGAINST FROZEN WATER LINES. Due to the extreme winter temperatures, Goshen’s Water Utility suggests residential and commercial Water Utility customers, who have water lines that are prone to freezing, leave their water run, at a single cold-water faucet, located inside their home or business. The water should be run in a small stream the size of a pencil lead. Running water is less likely to freeze. Residents are encouraged to take further precautions against frozen/burst water lines by insuring that any exposed pipes are insulated, and by eliminating sources of cold air near water lines. Areas most vulnerable to freezing are basements, crawl spaces, unheated rooms and water lines located in outside walls. In February 2014 the Water Utility issued a Freeze Warning asking for people to take the precautionary measure of running a single faucet; and if the customer contacted the Utility Business Office, their account was adjusted, through the length of the declaration of the Freeze Warning. The Water Utility has determined that a Freeze Warning is unnecessary at this time. The February 2014 Freeze Warning became necessary when the City of Goshen experienced extreme cold for an extended period of time. This situation forced the frost line to drop below 4-feet, causing several Water Utility lines and laterals, constructed at standard depth, to freeze, leaving customers along those lines without water service. Customer help, through water flow at their faucet, insured that water lines would continue to flow. The Water Utility will continue to monitor the depth of the local frost line; currently it has not reached a depth to cause concern about lines and laterals freezing. The Utility will keep customers informed, if further actions become necessary to prevent disruption to service, via local newspapers, Goshen’s web page and Facebook. Customers who experience loss of water service, or a slower than normal water flow, due to a frozen water line, are asked to contact the Water Utility Maintenance Department at (574) 534.5306.
