GOV DICKSON MEETS EDUCATION STAKEHOLDERS, PLEDGES GREATER INVESTMENT IN STATE VARSITY, OTHERS 21/02/2014 In a bid to reposition the State owned Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island and adequately address other issues confronting the education sector, Governor Seriake Dickson held a close-door meeting with stakeholders in the sector at Government House, Yenagoa. Addressing newsmen on the outcome of the meeting, the Commissioner of Education, Mr. Salo Adikumo disclosed that, a number of measures geared towards improving the infrastructure and academic content of the university were deliberated up on. According to him, Government has pledged to undertake the construction link roads, the abandoned library project as well as over forty staff quarters within the campus. He explained that, because of the importance Government attached to the projects, Governor Dickson has directed the award of contracts for the immediate commencement of work on projects before the end of next week. The education commissioner explained that, funds will also be made available to ensure the speedy completion f the projects with a view to ensuring that, some of the university’s courses that lost their accreditation are re-accredited along with new ones. “Major decisions taken were the award of contracts to construct roads within the NDU campus, building of library and completion of forty-one staff quarters” The Governor has directed that, contracts be awarded next week and efforts will be made to ensure that, the requirements for accreditation of more courses are put in place before the next visit of the accreditation committee” In his remarks, the Commissioner of Information and Orientation, Deacon Markson Fefegha expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the meeting, noting that it will impact positively on the education sector in line with the restoration agenda of the administration. Also speaking, the Pro Chancellor of the NDU, Professor Turner Isoun said the meeting also deliberated on issues bothering on funding, reforms to ensure that the operations of the University are sustainable and world class. Professor Isoun further explained that, means by which the University can generate its own revenue and take responsibility for its affairs as well as attain the needed autonomy were extensively discussed and assured that stakeholders would continue do their best in that direction. Also commenting, Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Humphrey Ogoni, commended Governor Dickson for taking his time to articulate the problems of the University, adding that it takes a leader with a strong conviction to move the education sector forward, to convene a meeting of stakeholders in the sector. The Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, NDU chapter, Dr. Beke Sese, described the deliberations as friendly, peaceful and fruitful, noting that the Governor expressed his desire to tackle the problems of the university and education generally in the State.
