GOVERNMENT OF IMO STATE PRESS RELEASE RE: CRISES IN IMO PDP AND APGA Following the lingering crises in the State Chapters of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, occasioned by the governorship primaries of the two Parties, the State Governor, His Excellency, Owelle Rochas Okorocha has called on the National leadership of the two Political Parties respectively to take steps towards resolving the problems without further delay, because of the heightened tension they have caused in the State at the moment. The major governorship aspirants in the PDP in the State are in deep in crisis over who actually won the December 8, 2014 governorship primary of the Party in the State. And supporters of the aspirants involved have been engaging in violent protest in the State Capital almost on daily basis. On one occasion, they clashed and if not the timely intervention of security agents nobody could have predicted what would have happened in such circumstance. In the case of APGA, the two known factions in the State had elected their governorship candidates respectively. One of the factions produced Captain Emma Iheanacho as the governorship candidate of the Party, while the other faction produced Chief Okey Eze as the guber candidate of the Party. Again, in two instances supporters of the two factions had clashed few days after they had had their respective primaries. The worrying tension the crises in the two Parties have caused following the conduct of their respective primaries in the state has become threatening. The situations won’t be seen now as only for the PDP and APGA. The security of the State is under serious threat with the type of trouble in the Parties in question. And nobody can predict what will happen next if the situation is not brought under control. The whole thing is affecting Imo people and their businesses. Last Tuesday, supporters of one of the contending governorship aspirants in the PDP in the State went on protest to the State office of the Party and throughout the day they blocked a major road that connects Owerri, and Okigwe. Indigenes of the State and visitors to the State who had one reason or the other to use that road could not do so. The next day, the story was the same because supporters of another aspirant came on counter protest. The State can no longer fold hands and watch this ugly development continue. The National leaders or officers of the two Parties should take the necessary actions to settle the problems that have engulfed the state branches of their Parties respectively. The way the whole thing is going, the State Government can no longer keep mute and watch people causing undue tension in the State and disrupting the socio-economic activities of the State. It is also important at this juncture to remind the governorship aspirants, their supporters and their Parties that they should not hide under the serene political atmosphere the Rescue Mission administration in the State has made possible to cause trouble or disturb the peace of the State. As a government that is always concerned about the welfare and well- being of the citizenry, the political battle going on now in the Imo PDP and APGA arising from the guber primaries of the Parties should be resolved at the moment with dispatch. Imo people can not afford to celebrate the Christmas under political tension. We are looking forward to seeing the National offices of the Parties in question resolving the squabbles.
