GOVERNMENT RUN - PROFITABLY Don’t believe the anti-government propaganda. One recent example is about the U.S. Postal Service. Not only is the Postal Service not broke, it has never used a dime of taxpayer money in 30 years. Ever over the past 4 fiscal years, the Postal Service made 611 million in net profit despite the worst recession in 80 years. The 20 billion in postal losses you heard about doesn’t stem from the mail but rather the 2006 Congressional mandate that the Postal Service pre-fund future retiree health benefits for the next 75 years and do so within 10 years! A burden no other public agency or private firm faces. Congress created this mess, and lawmakers can fix it without using a dime of taxpayer’s money. (Incidentally, the Postal Service has tens of billions in earned revenue sitting in surplus funds…yet needs Congressional approval to draw from its own funds.) Today the US Post Office provides even better services to the public than it has in the past and remains the center of a 1.3 trillion mailing industry supporting 8 million American jobs (Did you know that both FedEx and UPS use the Postal Service to deliver its mail to places they do not service!) Why the Congressional attempt to destroy the post office system? One word describes it all: Privatization, an ideological concept that private industry always does better than public. Today we know that’s not true. The post office is one example. Medicare is another. And, of course, none of us would want our fire departments to be run privately - etc.
