GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN CAN’T STOP WOMEN’S OFF-ROAD RACE FOR BREAST CANCER SAN BERNARDINO, OCT. 3, 2013 — After the government shutdown on Oct. 1, Ladies Race Towards a Cure, an annual women-only charity off-road race that raises awareness about breast cancer and funds for breast cancer research, lost access to its course on BLM land in Barstow, Calif. Rather than cancel or postpone the event, which was nine months in planning, racers and cancer survivors Holli Bechard and Julie Pierce appealed to Lori Bryant, manager of Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino. Glen Helen, a privately owned raceway, has agreed to host the Oct. 5-6 charity event, which is expected to draw more than 100 teams, 10,000 spectators and raise $125,000 for breast cancer research at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. In addition to hosting the race on short notice, Glen Helen Raceway is also waving all camping and gate fees for the teams and their families. Teams include mothers, daughters and friends racing in trucks, buggies, UTVs and Bugs on a six-mile loop in San Bernardino. Held during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the off-road race honors survivors and memorializes those who lost their fight with the breast cancer, a disease that is diagnosed in more than 200,000 women each year in the United States, according to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Now in its eighth year, Ladies Race Towards a Cure is the world’s largest female off-road event presented by Mojave Off-Road Enthusiasts (M.O.R.E.). The public is invited to attend this two-day racing event. Racing begins Saturday, Oct. 5, 4-6 p.m., and continues Sunday, Oct. 6, 7:30 a.m-5 p.m. Cost: $10 per person. Glen Helen Raceway, off the I-215 freeway at the Devore Exit, is located at 18585 Verdemont Ranch Road, San Bernardino, CA 92407.
