GOVERNOR LIYEL IMOKE, PDP AND SANCTIMONY IN CROSS RIVER STATE INTRODUCTION: This tiff has been going on for some time now in Cross River State – and nobody wants to address the portending issues, frontally. From my vantage, but distant perch, I wish to analyse and unravel this seeming and untenable imbroglio. Summarising the Book of Isaiah, Chapter 45, God tells us that: a) He didnt create the world to be chaotic but to be inhabited. So people shouldnt seek for him in chaotic ways. They should search for him in light and truth. b) On the other hand, the Babylonians are in desperate straits. Their idols wont be able to save them, and God will win his victory over them. c) Eventually, everyone will turn to Him, anyway, and besides He is the only source of righteousness and strength. Therefore, I have hope, that we can solve all our seemingly intractable problems in Cross River State, without shedding blood. TRANSITION AND SUCCESSION DEBACLE: The time is nigh for Governor Liyel Imoke, to round up and exchange the baton with a worthy successor, albeit, without rancour. But recent events, clearly show intolerance, insincerity, desperation, subterfuge and sheer malice. The heat generated by these activities should simmer now. We are in the same PDP and should appreciate that the Umbrella is big enough to cover and protect everybody. However, the apprehension and distrust expressed by some PDP members is justifiable and should be properly addressed. This is not to give fillip to megalomaniacs whose stock in trade is to jump ship, when we get into troubled waters. Everybody can quarrel with the washer-man, but not the person who wets his bed every night. While I will not subscribe to a situation where the cohesion and unity of PDP in Cross River State will be undermined and desecrated, I would suggest a convocation of the identifiable protagonists and antagonists in this storm in a tea cup. These would include, but not be limited to: HE,Senator Liyel Imoke, HE, Barr Efiok Cobham, HE, Donald Duke, Senator Florence Giwa, Senator Mathew Mbu, Senator Musa Adede, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, Senator Bassey Otu, Senator Ben Ayade, Hon Bassey Ewa, Hon Daniel Asuquo, Prince Goddy jeddy-Agba, Hon Ernest Irek, Dr Sandy Onoh, Chief Sam Bassey, Chief Sonny Abang, Hon John Enoh-Owan, Rt Hon Orok Duke, Rt Hon Larry Odey, Mr Gershom Bassey, Barr Venatius Ikem, Chief Bassey Ndem, Mr John Odey, Hon Ekpo Okon, Mr Joe Agi, SAN, Mr Fidel Ugbo, among others. God commands: ‘’Assemble yourselves and come; draw near together, ye that are escaped of the nations:…’’ (Isaiah 45, verse 20) Flowing from the above and in spite of the ongoing PDP Nomination processes, all contestable positions could be discussed and decided upon, as the case may be. This will alleviate pressure and eliminate the extant animosity and rancour presently pervading the political space in Cross River State. CONCLUSION: HOPE Finally, let us not pretend that all is well in Cross River State PDP. We should not also raise our hands in surrender and concede that our problems are insurmountable. These stormy clouds are only temporary and with a capable captain in charge, the ship will definitely reach the shore. PDP recognises Governor Liyel Imoke as the Leader of PDP in Cross River State, so he deserves our support, solidarity and guidance. Rex Rioux, tells us that: “A desire becomes a Hope when we discover a reason for its expectation, and there is no better reason to expect something than a promise given in the Word of God.” As we transit, let hope be our fuel, because hopelessness breeds and creates a feeling of depression. This fog must lift. Rt Hon(Chief) Orok Otu Duke Duke Town, Calabar CRS PDP Convener, 1998
