GOVERNOR PROCLAIMS JULY AS LAKES APPRECIATION MONTH Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad has proclaimed July as Lakes Appreciation Month, as a way of emphasizing that lakes and reservoirs are among Iowa’s most valuable natural resources. According the latest study from Iowa State University’s Center for Agricultural and Rural Development, 6 out of 10 Iowans visit lakes multiple times each year, spending $1.6 billion annually on recreation. “Our lakes and reservoirs improve the quality of life for all of Iowa’s residents and their importance should not go unnoticed,” Gov. Branstad wrote. Lakes and reservoirs provide fishing, drinking water, irrigation, energy, recreation, scenic beauty and habitat for wildlife. These beneficial uses have been of vital importance to Iowa’s history, growth and financial health.
